What is BeReal?
BeReal pings users once a day at a random time and gives them two minutes to post a simultaneous front+back camera photo. The pitch is "no filters, no editing, the real you."
How does BeReal work?
Each daily notification opens a two-minute window. The app posts to your friends feed and an optional public Discovery feed. Comments, RealMojis, and DMs (newer feature) let users react and message each other.
What parents need to know
- Default feed is friends-only, but Discovery shows posts to strangers globally.
- Location can be attached to every BeReal — often on by default.
- Late posts are labeled and visible, which pressures kids to drop whatever they're doing.
- The "authentic" framing means kids post in bathrooms, bedrooms, and at school.
Serious risks & safety concerns
Location exposure
Precise location can be attached to every post. Many kids leave it on without realizing strangers in Discovery can see where they live, study, and sleep.
Discovery feed
Discovery exposes posts to the global public. Adults can comment on minors' photos.
Unprepared posting
The two-minute window pushes kids to snap immediately — in bedrooms, locker rooms, and other private settings they would not normally post from.
Parental controls available
BeReal has minimal in-app controls. You can disable Discovery and turn off location per post, but there is no parent dashboard.
How MyParentalControls covers BeReal
MyParentalControls flags inappropriate Discovery comments, location exposure, and stranger DMs reaching your child's BeReal account.
Bottom line
High school and up, with location off and Discovery disabled.
