What is GroupMe?
GroupMe is a free Microsoft-owned group-chat app. Schools, youth groups, sports teams, and class chats live here.
How does GroupMe work?
Add a phone number, get added to groups by invite, text/photo/video chat the group. Members can DM each other once they're in the same group.
What parents need to know
- Anyone added to a group can DM anyone else in that group.
- Photos and videos go to the whole group instantly.
- Bullying and exclusion play out in side chats parents can't see.
Serious risks & safety concerns
Side-DMs from group members
Once your child is in a school group chat, every other member can message them privately.
Group bullying
Exclusion ("new group without X") and pile-on bullying are common in school-grade GroupMe culture.
Parental controls available
GroupMe has minimal controls. You can mute, leave, or report — but not pre-filter content.
